Islands at the Edge of the Wind
The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas): their wildlife, weather, islanders' life and the story of their two names.
Soundwindswept South Atlantic folk, fiddle, button accordion, acoustic guitar, stomping sea-shanty chorus, ocean waves, warm weathered vocals
Lyrics
[Intro]
Wind and waves,
the South Atlantic calling
[Verse 1]
Out in the South Atlantic, three hundred miles from the South American shore,
two big islands, East and West, and hundreds more,
Falklands in English, Malvinas in Spanish,
that name from the Malouines, the sailors of Saint-Malo, long vanished.
Stanley is the capital, roofs of red and green,
peat smoke from the chimneys, the harbour's steely sheen,
an old ship's hull still resting in the water, weathered, still,
white grass and diddle-dee rolling over every hill.
[Pre-Chorus]
Out in the camp the sheep roam free,
a wind that never rests, a sky as wide as the sea
[Chorus]
Falkland Islands, Islas Malvinas,
at the edge of the wind and the waves,
penguins on the white-sand beaches,
albatross over sea-carved caves
[Verse 2]
Gentoo, king and rockhopper, Magellanic in their burrows,
black-browed albatross in the largest colony on Earth,
elephant seals and sea lions hauled up on the shore,
Commerson's dolphins racing round the bow once more.
Darwin came aboard the Beagle in eighteen thirty-three,
sketching birds and stones and bones beside the sea,
some three thousand people living on these distant shores,
long days in the summer, and in winter, gales that roar.
[Chorus]
Falkland Islands, Islas Malvinas,
at the edge of the wind and the waves,
penguins on the white-sand beaches,
albatross over sea-carved caves
[Bridge]
Kelp forests swaying underneath the cold green swell,
shipwrecks in the harbour with their stories still to tell,
the Southern Cross above the camp on a clear and frozen night,
the islands at the edge of the wind, holding on tight.
[Final Chorus]
Falkland Islands, Islas Malvinas,
at the edge of the wind and the waves,
penguins on the white-sand beaches,
albatross over sea-carved caves
[Outro]
Wind and waves,
Falkland Islands, Islas Malvinas
