Lyrics
[Intro]
Kalaallit Nunaat, land of the people,
white horizon, deep blue sea
[Verse 1]
Largest island on the planet, wrapped in ancient ice,
four-fifths of it frozen, in places two miles deep,
at Ilulissat the glacier breaks with thunder in the fjord,
and icebergs drift toward Baffin Bay while the harbour sleeps.
Nuuk is the capital, bright houses on the stone,
red and yellow, green and blue against the snow,
Kalaallisut in the kitchens, in the classrooms and the songs,
a language that has travelled with the people all along.
[Pre-Chorus]
Under the midnight sun, through the long polar night,
the sky hangs curtains of green and violet light
[Chorus]
Kalaallit Nunaat, Greenland of the north,
drum and ice and aurora calling the seasons forth,
the qajaq cuts the water and the sled dogs run,
land of the people, under the midnight sun
[Verse 2]
Four thousand years of footsteps on the Arctic stone,
the Thule came from the west with harpoon, skin and bone,
Erik the Red brought Norse farms to the southern shore,
by the fourteen hundreds they had vanished, farming there no more.
In seventeen twenty-one the Danish missions came,
Home Rule in seventy-nine, and self-rule in two thousand nine,
the red and white flag rising on the twenty-first of June,
the longest day, the national day, the drum and the tune.
[Chorus]
Kalaallit Nunaat, Greenland of the north,
drum and ice and aurora calling the seasons forth,
the qajaq cuts the water and the sled dogs run,
land of the people, under the midnight sun
[Bridge]
Halibut and shrimp pulled from the cold deep sea,
musk ox and seal on the table, stories by the stove,
the qilaat drum is dancing, echoing off the ice,
the glaciers keep the memory of every winter's cold.
[Final Chorus]
Kalaallit Nunaat, Greenland of the north,
drum and ice and aurora calling the seasons forth,
the qajaq cuts the water and the sled dogs run,
land of the people, under the midnight sun
[Outro]
Kalaallit Nunaat,
white horizon, deep blue sea
