Pleasant Island
Nauru, once called Pleasant Island: the world's smallest republic, its reef, lagoon and twelve tribes, and life on one small island.
SoundMicronesian island folk, gentle ukulele and acoustic guitar, log drum, ocean waves, warm choir harmonies, easy swaying tempo
Lyrics
[Intro]
Pleasant Island,
waves around the reef
[Verse 1]
In the middle of the Pacific, just south of the equator line,
one small island ringed with coral, where the noddy birds fly,
twenty-one square kilometres, one road running round,
you can drive the whole nation while the sun is going down.
Yaren by the ocean, where the parliament meets,
Anibare Bay in turquoise, fishing boats and gentle seas,
Buada Lagoon among the palms, still and green and deep,
twelve thousand people on the island, a home they keep.
[Pre-Chorus]
Twelve tribes, twelve points on the star,
shining on the flag, telling who we are
[Chorus]
Pleasant Island, Nauru,
little land in a sea so blue,
frigatebirds circling high above,
a small place with a great big love
[Verse 2]
Sailors called it Pleasant Island in seventeen ninety-eight,
phosphate on the high plateau shaped the island's fate,
riches came and riches went, the Topside stands in stone,
now the island plants again and builds a future of its own.
Independence in sixty-eight, the thirty-first of January,
Angam Day in October, the people's homecoming story,
coconut and pandanus, fish from the reef at dawn,
Aussie rules on the island oval, the whole crowd cheering on.
[Chorus]
Pleasant Island, Nauru,
little land in a sea so blue,
frigatebirds circling high above,
a small place with a great big love
[Bridge]
Taming frigatebirds, an old island art,
calling them at twilight, keepers of the island's heart,
the smallest republic on the ocean, one of the smallest lands on Earth,
every wave around the reef a song of what it's worth.
[Final Chorus]
Pleasant Island, Nauru,
little land in a sea so blue,
frigatebirds circling high above,
a small place with a great big love
[Outro]
Pleasant Island,
waves around the reef
